NUWAO Oceania Nature-based Urban Adaptation driven by Indigenous Knowledge Design Competition

Location: Oceania, Kiribati, Tarawa Island

Description:

Project mission: adaptation of Oceania’s urban centers to climate change by working with nature in empowering ways for local and/or Indigenous peoples. Project tasks: Design: Optimising design to create a future that cares for nature and provides for future generations. Design strategies that can help reintegrate nature in our cities by transforming urban spaces into liveable, productive, and biodiverse systems. Adapt: Nature-based climate adaptation solutions to create, adapt, or regenerate interconnected hydrological, biological, and social ecologies. Perform: Using healthy ecosystems and biodiversity and crucial ecosystem services, as a key link between healthy ecosystems and human wellbeing in urban environments. Share: thriving, just communities that nurture peoples in diverse, unique places through co-design and participatory design. Learn: Create opportunities for learning, engagement and research in culturally enriching ecosystems. Project summary: Among other proposed locations out team’s focus area is Tarawa island (Kiribati). We believe that this island has the most serious problems - total extinction due to flooding, as the ocean level rising; stormy climate conditions, hygiene organization, problems with garbage disposal and hygiene, storm events due to constant climate change, overpopulation, high level of poverty of the population with very rapid growth of urbanization (~3%)and etc. We propose different nature-based technologies that will help to resist the flooding problem for some possible time. However according to our analysis, to stop the flooding completely is not possible, so we propose the new modular structure that can be built along the existing land, and in the future grow, forming the new infrastructure and connecting land together. As well the futuristic concept is to “bring all country land together” by possible connection of the modular systems among existing Attila and each other. Thr proposal pays homage to the myths of oceania, the process that have shaped the pacific island and the local culture of Kiribati. Nareu, who is a god according to kiribatis creation mith. He was floating in nothingness when suddenly discovered an island. Nareu broke tarawa into pieces and threw them in different directions making islands. He cleaned the sun and moon from dust and dirt so they can give light. Te kaimatoa – the dance of strength. National song – national power. The Kiribati people believe in a supernatural power of dance and song. This is expressed by strong breathing, loud vocals, trembling, vigorous movements, increased dance tempo or tonal level in songs, and movement with greater force. Design year: 2022
