The Sviyaga River floodplain

Location: Ulyanovsk, Russia

Description:

The Sviyaga River floodplain, which is currently a powerful spatial divider of the city, should become a new urban park. It will connect 4 city districts, become a driver for the development of the city with a place of attraction for residents and visitors. This will allow Ulyanovsk to form a natural and valuable recreational environment. Activation of the river is aimed at closer interaction with the city's residents. For this purpose, it is proposed to create a polycentric system of connected urban points of attraction, representing public and residential development, as well as landscaped embankment parks, squares and squares. This will ensure the connectivity of the areas by combining bicycle, jogging, and pedestrian routes. Their purpose is to enhance and diversify the functions represented in the adjacent areas and find support from local communities. Preservation of existing park and forest areas along the Sviyaga River is proposed. The development of the attraction centers is intended to change the appearance of unattractive and undeveloped areas. The project has chosen an "ecologically-oriented strategy" that improves the current state of the natural environment and includes corrective measures and regulations necessary to ensure comfortable and safe use of the area. To achieve the necessary functional balance in the area under consideration, the project proposes the placement along the river of various public facilities and linear centers of attraction for active recreation, sports and walking trails. In abandoned areas, it is proposed to place eco-oriented housing with cafes, stores, pharmacies, hair salons, restaurants, etc, on the first floor of the buildings. It is also planned to locate public and business buildings with educational complexes, co-working spaces and business gas pedals. This will ensure social control of the area by local residents and tenants, making it possible to use it all year round and include it in the urban infrastructure. The project provides for comprehensive measures aimed at the sustainable development of coastal areas. It is proposed to straighten and deepen the Sviyaga riverbed with the widening of the narrowed sections throughout the urban area. On the landslide areas, it is advised to strengthen the banks and slopes. To protect against flooding in problematic areas of the embankment, the bank is being constructed with the raising of the land level along the water. A system of biodrainage lakes and overflows (biodrainage channels) with flora and fauna is formed on the waterlogged areas. The proposed ecological environment is resistant to dry seasons, as well as prevent salinization and siltation of soils, preserves and supports the habitats of rare plants and animals. The project also provides for the placement of wastewater treatment plants.
